Opt-In
A marketing message (usually meaning e-mail in the form of an ezine) that a person
has elected to receive.
A true opt-in message can never be spam, as the person agreed to receive it.
A true opt-in message is defined, broadly (some people will vary this slightly) as:
- The person signed up to receive the messages (usually on a web site).
- The person confirmed they opted in (known as 'double opt-in'), for example by clicking on a link
in the sign-up e-mail, or by replying to an invite after signing up. This step is necessary to
prevent people signing up others either maliciously or by mistake.
- The person can remove themselves from the list at any time.
- The messages sent are on the topic for which the subscriber originally signed up for.
